Father Richard Caverly

A priest at the End of Days.

"Is Not My Word Like As A Fire?" While normally a sombre and taciturn individual, Father Caverly can, when the occasion demands, take the metaphorical pulpit and spit hellfire and brimstone with the best of them. Of course, this mightn't be the best approach diplomatically, but when certain subjects are touched on…

"Is It Not Like A Mighty Hammer?" Decades of practice has made Malleus Judicium virtually an extension of the Father's body. It has also kindled a keen interest in blacksmithing and metalworking.

Mortification: Caverly devotes a portion of every day to the ancient practice of flagellation, leaving his back in an almost permanent state of laceration. In times of necessity, the lash may drive him forward or keep him sane, but means that his back is unprotected, and vulnerable to everything from attack to infection.

  • Malleus Judicium (+3 load)
    • Literally 'Hammer of Judgement', the Malleus Judicium is a large, silver, two-handed warhammer. Reputed to date back to before the crusades, this weapon's history is long and storied. How it ended up in the hands of Father Caverly is unknown. Usually carried in a specially designed back harness.
  • Cuirass and Gauntlets (+2 load)
    • Battered, pitted and scarred, this set of light armour has obviously seen many battles, yet is still kept polished to a mirror sheen.
  • Circlet (+1 load)
    • A simple band of relatively thin, studded iron, worn on the head.
  • Blessed Stakes (+2 load)
    • Big, holy and pointy. They appears to have large heads, perfectly sized for hammering…
  • The Lash (+1 load)
    • Coiled and ready on the belt, this vicious whip is designed for one thing only - to flay flesh.
  • The Light (+1 load)

Personal History

Exactly where Father Richard Caverly is originally from and what his life was like before encountering the Foundation is mostly unknown. Attempts to broach the topic invariably end with a gruff suggestion that the questioner mind their own business. Fragmentary records indicate he was previously a senior member of the [DATA REDACTED] arm of the Vatican, and that his current employment by the Foundation is somehow related to the acquisition of SCP-738.

His current assignment to Area-354 was self-requested.

Standing a full six foot four, Father Caverly presents an imposing figure even when not in battledress. A multitude of assorted scars and burns stand testament to a long career spent in harm's way, the most visible of which reaches down from his forehead, passing through his blind right eye and continuing almost to the neck. Completely bald, he has an impressive grey beard.

Usually clad in simple robes, in his spare time he enjoys gardening, painting and classic literature. In his early 50s, he will use and tolerate modern technology, but goes to great lengths to avoid becoming overly reliant on it.

Genesis 19:24-25 (King James Version) - "Then the LORD rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; And he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground."
